My friends and I had just finished lunch...

My friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to rain heavily. When it became lighter, I decided to get my car which was parked at my office three streets away.

My friends argued that I shouldn’t go, mainly because I was seven months pregnant (怀孕的) then. I promised that I’d be very careful. One of them wanted to come with me but I asked her to stay with another friend who needed help with her baby.

I walked out of the hotel and started making my way to the car. At the crossing, a black car stopped and a man came out with an umbrella. Before I knew what was happening, he walked right through me and told me he’d escort (护送) me. Although I refused, he insisted (坚持) that he would.

During our walk, he kept telling me to walk slower, as the ground was wet. When we got to the car-park, I thanked him and he went away. I did not get his name and can hardly recognize (认出) him now. Did he stop for me? I’ll never know.

So how did I pay it forward? I was at home when I noticed two Indian workers walking in the heavy rain. They were probably on their way to the working place near my home.

They were surprised by my action. They were very grateful to me, probably wondered why a stranger was offering such kindness. I was so relaxed and happy that day.

I stood there listening to my father shout at top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.

Which one of you did this?”

We all looked down at the step. There was a child’s handwriting in chalk there. I was very frightened. I hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so afraid. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me, Dad.”

The others denied (否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth.

To find out who had written on the step, Father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the step.”

I tried my best to write the words differently. I didn’t want Dad to be able to tell it was me.

He collected our pieces of paper and looked at them. Since none of you will admit(承认) to have done it, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish(惩罚) me!

“I did it.” My sister stepped forward and said she had done something she hadn’t. She was grounded for a month.

We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older and I knew it was safe to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt sorry because of it. That was the last  time I let anyone take the blame for me.
