My English Learning I started learning English about 5 years ago. I was interested in English, so I read English every day. Also, I studied English with a group to improve my English. I have some difficulties about learning English. For one hand the English accent is different from the Chinese, so I couldn’t speak the English well when I started to learn it. For another hand, there were so many English words which I had to remember that I felt very hard. After learning English for 5 years, I found that watching English movies or singing English songs are good ways to learn English. I also thought using English as more as I can is very useful to learn English. 感兴趣;be different from与……不同;as…as和……一样;所以在学习中,我们应注意总结,牢记一些固定句式及短语,写作时就可以适当引用,使文章的表达更有逻辑性,更富有条理。 考点:话题作文。

Smartphone, poor sight

Look around and you will see people busy on their smatrphones (智能手机). Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?

According to a study, half of the British people own smartphones and they spend an average ( 平均 ) of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the U.K who suffer from short-sightedness (近视) since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.

Staring (盯)at smartphones for a long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink (自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at the things closer to your face, the blink slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphone in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils (瞳孔) become larger, too much light goes into your eyes. This can be bad for your eyes and causes a disease called glaucoma (青光眼).

Maybe it is possible for you to stop using your smartphone, but there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes.

* Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it.

*Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least 5 meters away from you and then focus on your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the beach in Washington, D.C’s Union Station, waiting for the train. Inside the waiting hall were many people.

A boy sat nearly. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.

“He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.

Just at that moment, a well- dressed young couple walked towards him.

“Excuse me,” the man bent down. “My wife and I thought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He handed the boy a meal box.

The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags(衣衫褴褛) in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, entering the hall.

Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old man to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He placed the still—warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.

“Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. It’s too much for a man at my age.”

We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and Dad went up to those in rags, “Excuse me…”

I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money.

It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than I had ever though possible.

There was a young man named Bill in England. Before leaving school, he began to look for a job. Few companies needed new clerks due to the financial crisis (金融危机) at that time. It became harder and harder to find a job. Luckily, a chance came up to him. A company wanted to employ one person. He and the other twenty people joined in the first interview. After that, three persons were allowed to enter the final test which would decide one person to be employed in the end. Bill was lucky to be among them. On the day of the second interview, Bill and the others arrived at the company on time. To their surprise, the interview was very easy. The interviewer only had a free talk with them, and then asked them to go back home waiting for the result. The next morning, Bill received a letter from the company which said he wasn’t accepted. Certainly, he felt disappointed. On the evening of that day, Bill surprisingly received another letter, which said he was employed. But why was he accepted? As a matter of fact, the first letter sent to Bill was also part of the test. Every one of them got a letter which had the same meaning that morning. Only Bill replied with “ thank you “ while the others said nothing.

Life isn’t all fun. There is always something making us unhappy. When you feel disappointed, please say “Thank you” to the person who disappoints you. That shows your great generosity(宽容) and politeness to others. If you do so, you’ll have more chances than others.

1.Bill was a student during the financial crisis.

2.Twenty people wanted to get the job.

3.Bill felt amazed when he received the second letter.

4.All the three people were employed by the company.

5.From the passage, we know that to the generous and the polite can help you get more chances.
