Jan was a window cleaner. One morning, J...

Jan was a window cleaner. One morning, Jan was in a lift of a high building with his window cleaning tools when the building was on fire.

There were five other passengers in the lift. All of a sudden the lift stopped. Although they didn’t know what had happened outside, they had only 100 minutes to get out of the building before it would fall into the dust.

Soon smoke began coming into the lift. The men knew that something was wrong. They tried to open the door but found a wall in front of them. The wall had the number 15 on it and they knew they were on the 15th floor. But their lift usually didn’t stop there, so there was no opening for them to escape. Jan decided they would have to make their own.

Knowing that the wall was made of a material that could be cut through, Jan took out his window cleaning tools, and began knocking a hole through the wall. When he felt tired, others helped.

Starting with one small hole, they cut through the three-inch-thick wall. Then they kicked hard at the wall. The wall cracked apart. They saw before them a tile (瓷砖) wall! Refusing to give up, they knocked a hole through the tile, then made the opening big enough to get through. Surprisingly, the fire-fighters were outside the hole, they took Jan and his partners to the nearest stairs and they ran down the stairs as quickly as possible. If the only sports you do are dancing your fingers across your keyboard, you could be in serious danger of more than just becoming overweight and out of shape.

Do you often feel sleepy, like something is weighing down on your head? Do you feel forgetful? Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable up and down your neck and lower back, and you can’t explain why? Do you get sick often? It could be radiation (辐射) from your computer causing it. If you spend three hours or more a day in front of a computer (and at this point, who doesn’t?), you are more easily harmed by the hazards.

We have got so used to using computers that we often neglect (忽视) to think of them as dangerous sources of harmful radiation. A safe amount of radiation is 25 V/m (Volts/meter). Do you want to guess how much our personal computers give off?

Ways of Protect Yourself from Harmful Computer Radiation

1. Decorate your desk with cactus (仙人掌) plants, they take in radiation.

2. Drink two to three cups of green tea a day and eat an orange daily. The vitamins in tea leaves and oranges protect us from radiation and keep our eyes healthy as well.

3. Use a screen filter(滤色镜) for your monitor.

4. Avoid having metal objects (金属物体) nearby on your desk.

5. Put the back of the computer to the wall. Most of the radiation comes off the back.

6. Keep your monitor at least 50cm away from your face.

7. Keep your computer rooms ventilated (空气流通的).

8. Eat healthily-----especially fruits and vegetables.

9. Don’t fall asleep on your computer. Turn it off if you have to rest nearby.

I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked straight ahead and didn’t say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little to me. “I can’t tell anything,” he finally said. “I never went to college, and none of your brothers went to college. I can’t say, ‘I don’t do this and do that’, because everything is different and I don’t know what is going to come up. I can’t help much with money either, but I think things will work out. ”

He gave me a new check-book (支票簿). “If things get pushing, write a small check. But when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some things we can always sell.” In four years all the checks I wrote were less than a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and sitting with the teachers’ kids filled in the financial gaps (经济缺口).

“You know what you want to be, and they’ll tell you what to take,” my father went on. “When you get a job, be sure it’s honest, and work hard.” I knew that soon I would be alone in the big town, and I would be missing the cool winds and a life where your thinking was done for you.

Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible (圣经) that he had read so often, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a friendly quarrel with one of the neighbors. I knew he would miss it. I knew, though, that I must take it.

He didn’t say, “Read this every morning.” He just said, “This can help you if you will let it.”

Did it help? I got through college without being a burden (负担) on the family. I have been able to make money since.
