On a hot summer day in South Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, a crocodile was swimming toward him. His mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two. A newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars (伤疤). The boy lifted his legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter," But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."

Many animals hide(躲藏) to stay alive(活着的). They hide in many ways. Some animals hide in leaves, some animals hide in snow. Usually their colors or shapes help protect them. It’s hard to see an Arctic bear in snow. Its white fur helps protect it. Chameleons(变色龙) can hide by changing colors. Their skin turns the same color as what is around them. Some chameleons can change their colors in five minutes.

Seeing many stripes at once can also confuse(使眼花缭乱) animals that want to eat them. Some birds stay in a circle(一圈), each toward a different direction. The class in America is almost the same as that in China. But something is different.

In America, if the teacher asks you a question but you don’t understand, you should put up your hand and ask the teacher to repeat it. If you don’t know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher you don’t know. Then he or she knows what you need to learn.

You mustn’t be absent on a test day. If you’re badly ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests (补考), you should take the test in one or two days after you go back to school.

Be on time! It is impolite to be late. If you come late, be sure to do it quietly. Take your books out of your bag after you go into the classroom. Then go to your seat and sit down quietly. In the US, you needn’t knock at the door before you come into the classroom.
