A BIG parade (阅兵式) was held in Beijing on Sep 3, 2015. A group of 12,000 Chinese soldiers and 500 pieces of modern military (军事的) equipment marched through Tian’ anmen Square, and nearly 200 aircraft (飞机) flew overhead in formation (队形).
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War Ⅱ. The parade was part of the celebrations (庆祝) in memory of it as well as victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
During its years of war against Japan, China suffered heavy losses. The purpose of the parade was “a tribute(致敬)to history and a call for peace”, said President Xi Jinping. He also said that China would cut its 300,000 soldiers.
History shows that China was the first country to fight against fascist(法西斯的) forces. Japanese soldiers began to invade (入侵) Northeast China on Sept 18,1931.
China paid a huge price for refusing to give in. By the end of World WarⅡ in 1945, about 35 million Chinese people had been killed or wounded.
The big military parade in Beijing has further provided an important chance for the world to look back upon history and look forward to building a better world.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little braver, just try the following things.
Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile , people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings, too; and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Get your attention elsewhere. Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not. You will become relaxed and find it’s not so hard to talk with others.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi!” or smile at someone, say to yourself “You can make it.” Keep trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you talk to others.

When Susan Chen left high school, she wanted to go to university. Unfortunately, her father was quite poor, and a university education cost a lot of money.
“Take the entrance examination,” her father said, “and we’ll think of something if you pass.”
Susan took the examination. She did not score very high marks, but she scored enough, and was offered a place at the university.
“I’m very proud of you, Susan,” her father said. “I must find the money for a university education for you somehow.”
“But how, Dad?” Susan asked.
“Well, I can sell my car and work a lot of overtime. I can even work at two jobs if necessary, one during the day and one at night.”
“You’re a very generous father,” Susan said.
“Your future is worth the sacrifice,” he told her.
The next day he sold his car and asked his boss to give him three hours overtime every day. This meant walking to work and working 12 hours a day, seven days a week, but he did not complain. His daughter’s education was worth it.
A year passed. Susan took her first-year examination.
When the results were announced(宣布), she ran home to tell her father the news.
“Dad,” she said, “I’ve got my examination results. You’ll be so pleased.”
“You’ve passed!” he exclaimed.
“Guess what? I got the third place and won the scholarship. You can get your car back and stop working so hard.”

The American secret service began in 1865. It has many important jobs. One is to stop different types of fraud(诈骗), such as printing fake(假的) money, credit card(信用卡) fraud and computer fraud. The other is to protect the president at all times.
The secret service’s earliest job was to stop people from making fake money. The secret service agents(特工) still have to do that because the criminals(罪犯) are smarter now. They are better at using computers and other expensive equipment. But agents are much smarter.
Protecting the president is hard. The most dangerous places are outdoors. Agents can’t check every person in the crowd, so they must watch the crowd carefully. And they always follow the president. They’re just like the president’s shadow.
Unluckily, some criminals do want to give the president trouble, or even hurt him. The secret service agents try to find them and stop them when they want to do something bad. It’s a dangerous, but important job. The secret service helps keep the president and the country safe.
