Today we will talk about expressions tha...

Today we will talk about expressions that use vegetables and fruits. For example, a cucumber is a long, green vegetable that people often eat in salads. You might say a person is as cool as a cucumber(黄瓜) if he never seems to worry about anything and stays calm in a stressful situation.

If two people are very similar, you might say they are like two peas in a pod. There are several expressions about beans. If someone is very energetic, you might say she is full of beans. If you say something does not amount to a hill of beans, you mean it is of little importance. I might say you don't know beans about a subject if you do not know anything at all about it. But if you spill the beans, you tell something that was supposed to be a secret.

Potatoes are a popular food in many areas. But something is considered small potatoes if it is not important. You probably would not want to hold a hot potato in your bare hands. This also means a problem or issue that no one wants to deal with. Someone might call you a couch potato if you sit and watch television all day and get little or no physical exercise.

Farmers have to separate the valuable parts of their crops from the waste. So separating the wheat from the chaff means keeping what is valuable and rejecting(去除) what is worthless.

Bad days happen to us all. Often a day that starts out bad just continues to get worse. Sometimes there’s a “domino effect(多米诺效应)” with bad events. For example, you sleep through the alarm, so you’re stressed. And you will sit in the bad traffic, which will also make you late for work, etc.

How can we turn a bad day to a good day? Here are some ideas that have worked for me:

Smile a lot

Smiling a lot will help you feel relaxed. Research has shown that smiling produces three useful chemicals which make us feel good.

Talk to a good friend

Keeping bad or unhappy things in your mind is not a good idea. Talking to someone who cares and listen really does help us feel better, too.

Concentrate on your good things

It’s hard to concentrate on how bad things are when you’re concentrating on how good things are! Think of 10 or more things you’re thankful for, and you’ll achieve a whole new outlook(人生观) on your day.

Get some exercise

If you can, go for a walk. Exercising will help you feel better. Excising can get your day back to be normal again.

Make the day a challenge

If you make yourself think of the day as a challenge, you’ll start to do all the things you can to make your day better.

Not long ago, I asked large mid-aged persons a question. I asked, “How many of you had a hobby when you were children?” Nearly everyone raised a hand. I then asked them to keep their hands in the air if they knew at least one of their children had a hobby. Most of the hands went down. I felt sad. It’s terrible if the children don’t have a hobby. How I wish all the parents can care their children’s hobbies!

Thirty years ago, almost every child in my neighborhood had some kinds of hobbies. Collecting and trading baseball cards was a popular hobby. Others, like coin collecting and stamp collecting, are also popular. One of my friends was collecting photos, another was collecting radios. In fact, hobbies can benefit children in several ways. They are expressions of personal success and self-discovery(自我发现). Hobbies also help build self- respect(自尊). Hobbies are educational tools, as well. For example, a child who becomes interested in rocketry (火箭技术) —one of the most popular hobbies, can explore those skills in many ways. By working on hobbies, children learn to set goals, make decisions, and solve all sorts of problems.
