June 13th, 2011 Dear Michael, I’m glad to tell you something about our colorful school life. We usually have our activities from 4:30 to 6:00 in the afternoon. We have different kinds of activities. Some of us are interested in sports. They play football and basketball. Every term there is a basketball match between students and teachers in our school. We also have some clubs, such as drawing club, dancing club and singing club. But computer is the most popular in our school now. We have a computer room in our school. There’re more than 100 computers in it. Every afternoon, some students go and play computer games. On Thursday afternoon we go to English corner. We like talking in English there. We like English corner very much. Because we practice lots of oral English there. We hope we can spend more time on such activities and less time on homework. Yours Li Ming 【解析】略

Every year millions of people are injured while exercising. Here are four things you can do immediately after an injury.

  1.   Rest. Stop using the injured part of your body. Lie down if necessary.

  2.   Ice. Put ice in a plastic bag. Place the ice on the injured area. Leave the ice in place for 30 minutes. Take away the ice for 15 minutes. Then put the ice back on for another 30 minutes.

  3.   Pressing. Put a piece of clean cloth around the ice and the injured area. You should tie the cloth hard enough to hold the ice, but not too hard.

  4.   Lifting. Raise the injured area. If possible, raise the area higher than the level of your heart.

When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?

In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.

Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true.

Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit’s foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”

People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole of good luck!
