—Does Lily still live alone? —She_______...

—Does Lily still live alone?

—She________live alone. But now she________living alone because she feels lonely.

A.used to; doesn’t used to B.used to; is not used to

C.was used to; doesn’t used to D.is used to; used to

B 【解析】 句意:——莉莉还一个人住吗? ——她以前一个人住。但现在她不习惯独居,因为她感到孤独。 考查动词短语。used to do sth.过去常常做某事,(意思现在不做了);be used to doing sth. 是指习惯于做某事。(这里的to 是介词)。第一个空后面的live是动词原形,因此用used to排除C/D;第二个空后面的living是动名词,因此选择be used to。故选B。

Americans began their days by eating whatever was most easily available(可得到的) since the earliest days of the United States. These foods often included bread, eggs or leftovers(剩饭).

Today, the feeling of being relaxed and comfortable without worries is still an important reason when it comes to breakfast. However, what people eat has changed over time. And some of today’s common breakfast foods, such as cereal (燕麦), are the result of advertising (广告).

“People created advertising to sell cereal,” says the writer of the book Breakfast: A History.  In it, Arndt Anderson adds, “One of the first ways that advertising was successfully used was to make mothers believe that it was OK for their children to eat these kinds of food. _____ also played an important role in orange juice becoming a morning drink. In 1916, farmers grew more oranges than usual, so advertisers began saying, “Drink an orange.” They wanted to make people believe that drinking orange juice was a healthy way to start the day.

As for coffee, it became so popular that some people carried coffee beans with them everywhere in the 1930s.

Researchers think people make cookies because they are much quicker to prepare than bread in the morning. Cooks then have to make fresh bread for dinner.

Arndt Anderson hopes more Americans will see leftovers as a breakfast food. She adds that leftovers taste good and good to make less waste.
