Ben was hoping for a video game for his birthday. There was also a board game he wanted. Finally, he wanted some comics.
He got the board game and some comics, but what was in the last package? It was from his sister, Karen. He slowly unwrapped the package. It didn't feel like a video game.
It was a purple sweater. Purple was his least favourite colour. He smiled and thanked Karen nicely, but he didn't want 'to wear that sweater. He couldn't wear purple!
He quickly put the sweater away in his room. Then he ran off to play his new board game with his family.
One day a few weeks later, Ben's mother asked him about the sweater. "Why don't you wear your purple sweater today?" she asked him. "Your sister made it just for you!"
"I'm not cold," Ben said without thinking. That day he was cold all day.
Then one day they were going out to dinner as a family. His mother asked him to wear the sweater again. "I don't want to wear it because I hate it," he quickly replied.
"Ben," said his mother," I know it's not the nicest sweater in the world, but think about how important Karen is to you. You know she will be proud if you wear it just this once."
Ben walked slowly to his room. He knew she was right. He wore the sweater to dinner.
His sister smiled all night.

You arrive at the mall anxious to buy your favorite CD or the coolest computer game. Nothing will stop you, not even the price — even if you don't have enough money, Mom or Dad will use a credit card(信用卡) to pay. But wait! Is using a credit card really that simple? There are some things you should know about using credit cards before you go shopping.
1.Credit card companies lend you money, which you are expected to pay back. They don’t lend you money just to be nice, however. In fact, they make billions of dollars this way.
You spend 45 dollars buying a pair of jeans on a credit card, then about a month later, the credit company sends you a bill for 45 dollars.2.But what if you can’t pay the whole bill? Usually, you are allowed to pay part of it. Let’s say you pay $10 the first month. Now the credit card company begins to get money from you. They charge extra money, called interest(利息), on whatever part of the money you didn't pay.
Now the $35 you still have on your bill begins to grow. Even if you don’t buy anything more, by the time you get your bill the following month, you will have more than $35 to need paying back. And every day, interest keeps adding up.3.
But the good news is that a credit card is convenient. 4.Besides, the credit card companies also offer extra services. For example, if something you bought online with your card stops working in a short time, the company may give your money back.
5.They spend more money than they can afford to pay back. Knowing how to use credit wisely will be necessary and help you to be a smart shopper.
A. It is sometimes the only way to pay when you shop over the Internet.
B. You'd better borrow money from friends instead of using a credit card.
C. Using a credit card is a way of borrowing money to buy things.
D. Some people get themselves in trouble with credit cards.
E. If you pay the whole 45 dollars back right away, it won't cost you anything.
F. So actually those jeans will end up costing you more than $ 45.
G. I always believe money is not everything.
It was nearly seven o'clock, when a man walked into a bar, ordered a drink and turned to watch the television.
The seven o'clock news was on and it was showing a man standing on top of a tall building. He was looking down at the crowd of people below.
On the ground, a police officer with a megaphone(扩音器)was trying to tell him not to jump.
"Let's talk about your problem," the police officer was saying. "Perhaps we can help you."
The man turned to the bartender(酒吧侍者)and said, "I bet you a hundred dollars he doesn't jump.
The bartender looked at him. "You're offering me a hundred dollars if he jumps? Is that right?"
"Yes. I don't think he'll jump."
The bartender smiled. "OK. You've got a bet."
The man turned back to the TV and watched it carefully. The bartender, however, did not seem to be very interested. He continued washing glasses and serving the other customers.

Parents complain about their teenagers' noses always in their phones. But they might want to look into their own screen time habits.
A study from the Pew Research Center was put out last week. It found that two-thirds of parents are worried about the amount of time their teenage children spend in front of screens. But more than a third of parents said they have worries about their own screen time.
More than half of teens said they often or sometimes find their parents to be distracted(分心的).It's often when the teens are trying to have a conversation with them. The study calls teens' relationship with their phones "closely connected" at times. It shows that nearly three-fourths check messages when they wake up. They also check their notifications(通知).Parents do the same. But parents do it at a lower rate. That rate is 57 percent. It is still a lot.
Big tech companies face a growing backlash(强烈抵制).There are complaints against the nature of their products. And against their apps. People complain about the endless notifications and other features. They say they are created to keep people tied to their screens.
Many teens are trying to do something about it. Fifty-two percent said they have cut back on the time they spend on their phones. Fifty-seven percent did the same with social media.
Researchers say parents have a big role in their kids' screen habits. Setting a good example is a big part of it.
"Kids don't always do what we say but they do as we do." That's according to Donald Shifrin, a professor who works at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He was not doing the Pew study. "Parents are the door that kids will walk through on their way to the world."
