Mascots(吉祥物) are great ambassadors(大使)for sporting events. You may remember the five cute "Fuwa(福娃)”dolls from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now, get ready to meet two new mascots.
On Sept 17, there was a giant panda with a white helmet named “Bing Dwen Dwen(冰墩墩)” and a red lantern baby called“Shuey Rhon Rhon”(雪容融) as the two mascots for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games(冬奥会和残奥会). These two mascots show Chinese culture. The giant panda is Chinese national treasure, and the red lantern is an important element(元素) of Chinese New Year celebrations. What’s more, the panda's helmet(头盔) stands for modern society and its white color means the snow and ice of winter sports.
“The two mascots includes elements of traditional Chinese culture and a modern international style, as well as emphasizing the characteristics of ice and snow sports," Beijing 2022 Games executive president(执行主席) Chen Jining told Xinhua.
These two mascots show Chinese characteristics(特征). And their names express Chinese people's understanding of the Olympic spirit(精神). “Bing” and “Shuey” mean “ice” and “snow” in English. “Dwen Dwen” means “honest and lively” and “Rhon Rhon” has the meanings of “tolerance(包容)”and “integration(融合)”.
“They can express the Olympic spirit. They warmly invite people all over the world to come and visit China." Chen told Xinhua.

Some of you may play Ant Forest. It is a game on Alipay(支付宝). Users collect “energy” to make their "trees” grow. When the “energy” reaches a certain level, some organizations(组织) and companies will plant a real tree in a desert(沙漠) area of China. And now it seems that our country has made the world a greener place for people all over the world.
A study by NASA(美国航空航天局) in February showed that China and India have made the Earth greener over the past two years. The study has found that since 2000 the Earth's green leaf area has increased(增加) by over 5 million square kilometers. That's the same size as the total area of the Amazon(亚马逊) rainforest. It is mostly the result of big tree-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约化农业) in both countries, according to NASA.
“China and India have only 9% of the planet's land area covered in vegetation(陆地植被面积), but they did one third of the increased greening for the whole world." Chi Chen, the study's lead author(作者) and a researcher(研究员)at Boston University, US, told CNN(美国有线电视新闻网). China was the major contributor(主要贡献者), adding 25% to this increase, while India added 6.8%.
Over the past ten years, China has done something great to green the land. In 1978, China began a national forestation project(植树造林工程). It is also known as the“Great Green Wall". The program has seen many trees planted in thirteen provinces in northern China to act as windbreaks, according to China Daily.
With China's success in dealing with forestation, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP联合国环境规划署) believes China is a good example for others to follow.“China is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world," UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim(执行主任埃里克索尔海)told Xinhua.

People remember bad memories more easily and in greater detail(细节) than good ones. Why is that? A new study finds that people do this because of evolutionary(进化的) reasons.
Elizabeth Kensinger and his partners in Boston College, US, did a study looking at this. They found negative feelings like fear and sadness caused(导致) an increase(增长) in brain(大脑) activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain that controls(控制) memories, So memories caused by negative feelings are kept in greater detail than happy or other kinds of memories.
For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.
According to Kensinger, it is easy to understand this in an evolutionary(进化论的) point of view. He said that people paid attention(注意) to dangerous information so they could use that information to guide their actions and save their lives. They could also use it to plan for similar events in the future.
The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember bad memories. This line of research will help solve the problem of stress(压力) disorder(失调).
