Phyllis Wheatley is regarded as America’s first black poet. She was born in Senegal, Africa in about 1753 and brought to America at about the age of seven. John and Susannah Wheatley bought her for three pounds at a slave (奴隶) market in Boston in 1761. Phyllis was soon accepted as one of the family, which included being raised and educated with the Wheatley’s twin 15-year-old children, Mary and Nathaniel. At that time, most females, even from better families, could not read and write, but Mary was probably one of the best educated young women in Boston. Mary wanted to become a teacher, and in fact, it was Mary who decided to take charge of Phyllis Wheatley’s education. Phyllis soon showed her remarkable talents. At the age of twelve she was reading the Greek and Latin classics.

At the age of thirteen, Phyllis wrote her first poem. She became a Boston sensation (引起轰动的人物) after she wrote a poem on the death of the preacher George Whitfield in 1770. It became common to read Phyllis Wheatley’s poetry in polite society. Mary had tried to interest publishers in Phyllis Wheatley’s poems, but once they heard she was black they weren’t interested.

Then in 1773 Phyllis went with Nathaniel, who was now a businessman, to London. Thirty-nine of her poems were published in London as Poems on Various Subjects. It was the first book published by a black American. In 1775 Phyllis wrote a poem about George Washington and sent it to him.     Every kid wishes to be an adult. Do you remember playing house as a child—pretending to be a grown-up like your parents? Did you imagine you were a doctor, a soldier or a teacher? At that time, anything seemed more exciting than being young.

But now as grown-ups, some adults find they cannot leave childhood behind. They become "kidults" (kid+adult). Being a kidult has become a lifestyle-choice among young people across Asia.

Some kidults collect toys they once played with. Hello Kitty, Garfield, and Snoopy have many adult fans around the world. It is not unusual to see a 20-something woman with a big, Garfield-shaped cushion on her sofa or a Hello Kitty mobile phone accessory(附属品).

Other kidults still enjoy children's stories and fairy tales. For example, Bloomsbury even published the Harry Potter novels with an adult cover. That way, no one else on the subway will know that an adult is actually reading a children's book.

"Kidults can be like vitamins to society. Adults who value their childhood and hold on to pure, child-like emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society," said Lee So-jung, a professor at Hankuk University(韩国外国语大学)of Foreign Studies.

He added that kidult culture may fill the generation gap between adults and kids. It could give children and their parents books, movies, and cartoon shows to enjoy together.

Tim Greenhalgh, an adviser in London explained that some kidults just refuse to grow up. They hold on to childhood because working life in a busy and stressful city frightens them. Kidults would like to forget their age and openly show their fear of society and adulthood.

“So,they can escape from increasingly busy and stressful lives that are hard to deal with,’’Greenhalgh said.

1.Why does a kid wish to be an adult?

A.Because he wants to be independent.

B.Because he doesn’t want to be controlled by adults.

C.Because he wants to experience the real world.

D.Because he believes there will be more exciting life ahead.

2.What can we infer from the passage?

A.Some Kidults refuse to grow up.

B.Some Kidults in Britain like reading on the subway.

C.Some Kidults think childhood is the best time of their life

D.All Kidults want to escape from the busy and stressful life

3.One of the advantages of the kidult culture is that________.

A.it can make adults face the real social life.

B.it can make our society young and full of life.

C.it can increase the sales of children’s books

D.it can lead to harmonious relationship between adults and kids

4.In the opinion of the Professor in a Korean University, kidults are ________.

A.Immature(不成熟)and weak B.necessary to our society

C.looked down upon D.getting more and more

In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的) place on the Earth.

As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南极条约》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.

Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen (速冻) food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.

Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.

Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七级以上的) winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.

What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.

Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

1.From Paragraph 1, we learn that the Antarctica________.

A.is covered with snow and ice B.rains heavily from time to time

C.has little wind most of the time D.has sunshine during every night

2.Scientists from China go to Antarctica to ________.

A.find out ways to control water pollution

B.research climate change and marine biology

C.grow plants and vegetables in special condition

D.stop the hunters from killing the marine biology

3.We can replace (替换) the underlined word passion in the last paragraph with________.

A.strong love B.full preparation

C.pleasant introduction D.amazing imagination

4.The passage is mainly about________ .

A.view of the Antarctica B.exploring the Antarctica

C.how to survive in the Antarctica D.climate changes of the Antarctica
