The Shenandoah River still runs in a d2. valley (山谷) between the mountains in West Virginia, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. There is an old story which tells how the river got its name.

1.little 2.deep 3.centuries 4.fish 5.during 6.down 7.shining 8.language 9.ran 10.joined 【解析】 本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍Shenandoah这个名字的历史渊源。 1. 根据下文“but the soft sound of his name was given to a river”他的名字被赋予给了一条河流,可知前后应为转折关系,虽然人们对他知道的极少,但他的名字被赋予给了一条河流。极少的little。故填little。 2. 根据下文“For hundreds of years, the native Americans lived near this lake,”,可知在欧洲人来到美洲之前的几百年,印第安人一直生活在这个湖附近,几百年即为好几个世纪,世纪century,此空前有many,用复数centuries。故填centuries。 4. 故填during。 6. 根据前一句“climbed up the mountains and set up camp”,可知他们是在山上安营扎寨,应当是往下看。往下看look down。故填down。 7. 结合前文,可知“Clear Daughter of the Stars.”

There is a famous expression in English, “Stop the world, I want to get off!” This expression means a feeling of fear or stress, which makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. Stress is feelings of worry about your work or personal life. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress leads to physical, emotional, and mental health problems.

There are many physical effects of stress. Stress can affect (影响) the heart. It can cause high blood pressure. Stress can affect the respiratory system It can lead to asthma—a medical condition that makes breathing difficult. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches (疼痛). These are only a few examples of illnesses resulting from stress.

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel worried. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact (过激反应) to little problems. For example, a kind mother under a lot of stress at work may shout at her child for dropping a glass of juice.

Suffering from stress for a long time can lead to serious mental illnesses. Depression, a very strong feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of stress. Eating disorders (紊乱) are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to go on, one’s mental health is in danger.

It is clear that stress is a serious problem. It has a great influence on our health, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress—stop the world and rest for a while.

Everybody likes to feel that she or he is special. Sadly, many of us grow up believing that we’re not special at all. We wish that we could be more attractive or better at sports. We wish we had had more money or nicer clothes. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we think we’re not good enough just as we are. In the film. The Tin Man wishes he had a heart. The Scarecrow wishes that he had a brain, and the Lion want courage. Finally, each of them realizes that he already has what he wants.

Nearly all parents want us to be the best we can be. They sometimes try to encourage us to do better by comparing us to others. They mean well, but the message we usually get is that we’re not good enough. We start to believe that the only way we can be special is by being better than somebody else, but we are often disappointed (失望的). There will always be somebody out there that is better than we are at something. There are a lot of people around who may not be as smart as we are but who are better at sports. Or they may not be as handsome, but they are more successful. It is unthinkable for us to be better than everybody else all the time. Like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, we all need what we believe will make us better people.

What we don’t understand is that often we already have the very things inside us that we look for. Our parents often forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good enough just as we are. Perhaps no one told them when they were growing up, or maybe they just forgot. Either way, it’s up to us to remind them sometimes that each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are ... is enough!

1.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the text?

A.To describe how smart we are. B.To talk about your family problems.

C.To explain the importance of being yourself. D.To suggest how people can change their way of life.

2.This article was most probably written by __________.

A.a teenager B.a youth worker C.a teacher D.a parent

3.What does the writer say about our parents?

A.They never compare us to other children. B.They always tell us that we are good enough.

C.They often forget to tell us that we are special. D.They never forget to tell us that we are special.

4.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.What Makes You Smart B.What Makes You Happy

C.What Makes You Strong D.What Makes You Special

Chess is called the game of kings. People have been playing it for over 500 years. Chess comes from an even older game from India. The chess we play today is from Europe.

Chess is a two-player game. One player uses the white pieces. The other uses the black pieces. Each piece moves in a special way. One piece is called the king. Each player has one. The players take turns moving their pieces. If a player lands on a piece, he or she takes it. The game ends when a player loses his or her king. There are a few more rules, but those are the basics(基本规则).

Some people think that chess is more than a game. They think that it makes the mind stronger. Good chess players use their brains. They take their time. They think about what will happen next. These skills are useful in life and in chess. Chess is quite like an exercise for the mind.

You don’t always have lots of time to think when playing chess. There is a type of chess with short time limits (限制). It’s called blitz chess. In blitz chess, each player gets ten minutes to use for the whole game. Your clock runs during your turn. You hit the time clock after your move. This stops your clock. It also starts the other player’s clock. If you run out of time, you lose.

Chess is not just for people. Computers have been playing chess since the 1970s. At first they did not play well. They made mistakes. As time went on they grew stronger. In 1997, a computer beat the best player in the world for the first time. It was a computer called Deep Blue. Deep Blue was big. It took up a whole room. By 2006 a cell phone could beat the best players in the world. Chess surely has come a long way.

1.How does a game of chess end according to the text?

A.One player becomes king. B.One player loses his or her king.

C.One player stops his or her clock. D.One player takes the other player’s pieces.

2.Which best describes the main idea in Paragraph 4?

A.It explains how time clocks work. B.It explains how blitz chess is played.

C.It suggests that players should think less. D.It describes many different ways to play chess.

3.Which happened first?

A.Deep Blue took up a whole room. B.Computers did not play chess well.

C.Deep Blue won an important game. D.Cell phones got good at playing chess.

Well done, Javier, on all your hard work this term. You are always active in speaking activities, and this is great. I always enjoy reading your writing too, you have very good ideas. You can see from your marks that reading is not a problem for you.

Sometimes you still make small grammar mistakes, and I think you can improve your vocabulary. I suggest you should review(复习) many of the language points we studied this term.

The area you need to work on the most is listening. I know this is difficult for you. I recommend more practice at home. Listen to English TV shows and radio as much as possible.

Have a nice holiday, and good luck for next term!
