It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas was nearer, her dream for a bicycle seemed to fade (消退). We bought her a lovely doll, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that “I really want a bike more than anything else.”

It was just too late. With such a lot of preparations to do for the Christmas dinner, we did not have the time to buy our little girl a bike. On Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, were sleeping in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the sadness of our child. “What if I make a little bicycle out of clay () and write a note that she could exchange the clay bike for a real bike?” her dad asked. So he spent the next four hours making a small clay bike.

On Christmas morning, we were excited to wait for Almie to open the little gift box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. “Does this mean that I can exchange this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never exchange this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I want to keep this instead of getting a real bike.” At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth (竭尽全力) to buy her every bicycle in the world.

One afternoon I visited an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the art works. A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and found the wife was doing all the talk. I admired (赞赏) the husband for putting up with her continuous talk. Because of their noise, I moved on.

I met with them many times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her continuous talk, I moved away quickly. I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white thing. He extended (展开) it into a long stick and then tapped (敲打) his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.

“He’s a brave man.” The salesman at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blind at such a young age. But he said his life wouldn’t change during his recovery (恢复). So, as before, he and his wife come in when there’s a new art show.” “But how does he enjoy the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.” “Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”

I learned something from the couple that day. I saw a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight (视力) and a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.

1.“…I moved away quickly.” in Paragraph 2 shows that the writer ________.

A.was in the hope of visiting more rooms B.was in a hurry to buy some gifts

C.was tired of the nonstop talking D.was not interested in the art show

2.We can infer (推断) from the passage that the husband ________.

A.was not born blind B.couldn’t stand (忍受) his wife

C.knew nothing about art D.completely depended on (完全依靠) his wife

3.The passage is mainly about ________.

A.the importance of art B.good manners in public

C.love of a husband D.love between a couple

Below is some advice given by the English children on how to help Africa. Who do you agree with?

I think being healthy is the most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we give is spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water supplies and better health care.
---Robin, aged 16, Birmingham

I think the most important thing is to improve the education in the African countries. There is an old saying, “ If you give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day. If you teach him how to fish, you’ll feed them for lifetime.” We need to help people to help themselves, not just throw money at the problem when it appears.
---Rebecca, aged 15, Liverpool

People seem to give a lot more money to charity when there is a sudden, huge disaster like the earthquake. It’s good for people to do so, but I also think that everyone should give a small part of their money to charity. If everyone does that, it will make a big difference.
---Mary, aged 14, Stratford

Giving money to charity can help, but it’s not the final answer. I think what these countries need is a good government.
---Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle

The best thing we can do is to send experts like engineers, doctors and teachers to help the people to help themselves.
---Robert, aged 16, Cardiff

1.Which two children have the similar ideas?

A.Mary and Rebecca. B.Bethany and Mary.

C.Rebecca and Robert. D.Rebecca and Bethany.

2.What does Rebecca mean by saying “ We need to help people to help themselves”?

A.We should help the teachers in Africa to improve their teaching methods.

B.We should help people in Africa how to build a good government.

C.We should help the African people develop skills to make a living.

D.We should help the African people build more schools.

3.Where can you possibly find the advice?

A.In a travel guide. B.On a website.

C.In a student’s textbook. D.In a sports magazine.
