Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But, according to a new study,we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year. Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now,the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as £172, 000 ayear. The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do, as well as the hours theyare working, to determine the figure. This wouldmake their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns. By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18, it found that, on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11 pm. To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour,it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on,including housekeeper, part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer.Being a part-time lawyer,at £48.98 an hour, would prove to be the mostprofitableof the “mum jobs”, withpsychologist (心理学家 ) a close second. It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 per cent making emotional(情感的) demand as the hardest thing about motherhood. Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends. The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on,Mother's Day.The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness.Investing(投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent. 1.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister? A. £30,000. B. £142,000. C. £172,000. D. £202,000. 2.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from____. A. emotional demand B. low pay for work C. heavy workload D. lack of training 3.What is stressed in the last paragraph? A. Mothers' importance shows in family all year long. B. The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile. C. Mothers' devotion to children can hardly be calculated. D. Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return. 4.What can we conclude from the study? A. Mothers' working hours should be largely reduced. B. Mothers should balance their time for work and rest. C. Mothers' labour is of a higher value than it is realised. D. Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.

I was almost 10 years old the first time I remembered to move to a new house. One of the things that troubled me most was that I had to leave in the middle of a book. Our fourth grade teacher, Mrs.Rice, was reading aloud to our fourth grade class from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie—a few pages each day. I was a child in the fifties and sixties, long before the television series started Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, so I couldn't just pick up on the story on the black-and-white television in our new living room. I must have told my teacher how sad I was to leave in the middle of Laura's story, which I'd grown to love.Mrs.Rice, in all her wisdom, told me she was sure the book would be waiting in the library in my new town. She said I should go there once we got settled, check it out and finish reading it. The move was not among the easiest I've made in my lifetime. The new teacher was certainly no Mrs.Rice, and with a few fortunate exceptions, the new kids weren't like the friends I'd left behind. My mother knew the comfort I'd found in books through the years—beginning with the first one I remember her reading to me, Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses. So, in her wisdom, she loaded my siblings and me in the car and took us to the Carnegie-style library in our new town. Over the next five decades, I moved more than a half-dozen times, but one thing was constant in each community—the library was one place where I always felt at home and was never worried about what people thought of the “new kid”. 1.What does the author intend to tell readers in the passage? A. Books are of great influence. B. Mrs.Rice is a good teacher. C. He is terribly tired of moving. D. His family lives a life of unrest. 2.The author felt upset about the first move ____. A. because he had to say good-bye to Mrs.Rice B. because he lost contact with Laura Ingalls Wilder C. because he couldn't finish the book he liked D. because he had no chance to watch TV 3.What advice did the author get from Mrs.Rice? A. Take Laura's story with him everywhere. B. Laura's story isn't the best one in the world. C. He'd better settle down in a local library. D. Pay a visit to the local library as possible. 4.After settling in a new home, the author ____. A. would find many such good teachers as Mrs.Rice B. was able to get on well with his classmates C. would make a great fortune in life D. looked kind of blue to a certain extent

The United Nations reports global warming is reducing rainfall and increasing temperatures in most of the world's deserts.A report suggests the changes are hurting many who farm on desert edges. In West Africa, the effects are serious and making the food produced there not enough. Those living in farming regions along the Sahel desert have found their arable(适于耕种的) land is decreasing as desert sands cover more areas. The town of Podor once was a place where grains grew and cattle ate grass. But now, the people who live there say food is becoming harder and harder to get.The reason is the advancing desert. Oumar Samba Kane is one of the leaders of his village. He carries a bag of grains from a neighbouring village to add to his village's nearly empty storeroom.“In the past years, we had enough food to last a year and we would sell the surplus(剩余) to make money,” Kane said.“Now we do not even have enough for ourselves.” Rivers once used for fishing and watering cattle are drying up.Pieces of green land are few and far between.Cows are basic food in the area, but now herders(牧人) must drive their cattle for days to look for grass.Crops have also suffered. And for the most part it is only older farmers, like Moussa Aliou Sow, who stay behind to try to do farm work.“I'm 67 years old,” Sow said, “All I know is agriculture. There is nothing else I can do.” He says his hands are tired of growing crops on the land, which is producing less and less. There used to be rice in these fields just a few years ago. Scientists blame not only global warming, but also farming practices such as clearing trees and over planting crops for the desert's advance. But farmers say they can't survive without farming. 1.From the passage we know that global warming ____. A. has reduced rainfall worldwide B. has increased temperatures everywhere C. has made the lives of many farmers on desert edges harder D. has caused many deaths in West Africa 2.There isn't enough food in the town of Podor mainly because ____. A. there are not enough farmers there B. a lot of farming land has become desert C. farmers are tired of growing crops on the land D. a lot of farmland has been used to plant grass 3.What were things like in Oumar Samba Kane's village in the past? A. The villagers had more than enough food to eat and could sell the rest for money. B. The villagers had to borrow food from a neighbouring village. C. Cattle couldn't get enough water because all rivers were dry. D. Herders drove their cattle for days to find green land. 4.The passage mainly talks about ____. A. villagers' life in West Africa B. climate changes in the world C. the development of farming D. the effect of the advancing desert

Everyone Can Help to Save the World We are all environmentalists now.We all know about acid rain and the ozone hole.1. As consumers we have the power to make decisions which will contribute to a better world and it is in our power to do what we can to protect the Earth. 2. In this way we have the power to influence retailers(零售商) to sell us these so-called “green” products. Therefore, the supermarkets have understood the message and are now trying to improve their environmental image. They are turning to less wasteful and recyclable packaging. The range of “green” products will continue to expand to meet the growing demand. This message has also reached the manufacturers.3. There are a number of ways we can do this. For example, we now know how important it is to have our homes well insulated(隔热).We should choose the best energy efficient technology, such as modern light bulbs which can reduce electricity consumption by 80% over the older ones.We must also work hard to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce. In conclusion it is important to emphasize once again the rise of consumer power. We must realize that we are all part of the problem.5. A.But what are we doing about these problems? B.There are some other ways to protect the environment. C.Everybody has the duty to contribute to a cleaner world. D.We can reduce energy consumption at home to cut the emissions from power systems. E.Nevertheless we must also realize that we have the responsibility to be part of the solution. F.Companies are developing environmentally friendly products that maintain a high quality and a low price.
