Last week, about 600 teenagers in the US imagined a future changed by technology in which their lessons are taught by robots and they learn about celebrities and alien languages. They believe they will use jet packs, and hoverboards (旋转飞盘), as everyday transport.

All the participants (参加者) of the survey are teenagers born into the Internet age. The study is to show how the first cyber (与电脑有关的) generation dream about a future life created by advanced technology.

Most believe there will still be schools to go to, but that technology will play an increasingly important role in learning. The 600 teens surveyed think there will still be teachers, but 37 percent imagine them to be robots. Some 24 percent believe that teachers will still be human but they will have interchangeable microchips (微型芯片) so that one person can teach all subjects.

More than one in two believe hoverboarding will be popular, while one-third say that wearing rocket boots will be their favourite activity. Another third think jet packs will be popular. Nearly 30 percent think football and bike-riding will remain popular.

When it comes to the courses, they think future generations will be learning about robot building (63 percent), alien languages (47 percent), celebrities (26 percent) and R&B music (22 percent).

Children will wear virtual reality helmets (可视头盔) to bring lessons to life, say 40 percent, while over 20 percent believe they will not need lessons because microchips put in their head will send relevant (相关的) information into the brain.

Matt Whyman, adviser to the chief medical officer on youth issues at American Online, said, “The kids seem very aware of the liberating qualities of technology.”

1.The survey was made in order to know       .

C. Their dreams about the school future will certainly come true.

D. In the US, robots have appeared in the classroom to give students lessons.

No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the US. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Famous dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these presents detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.

Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational” which feature crime and gossip (闲谈), to the “serious”, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions, American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.

Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes, so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties. A few newspapers support extremist (极端主义的) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are moderate (中立的). Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.

As in other countries, American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair (水门事件). The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.

1.There are fewer national newspapers in       .

A. the US than in Britain or France

B. France than in the US or Britain

C. Britain than in the US

D. France than in Britain

2.Why do most American newspapers try hard to entertain their readers?

A. Because they have to give factual news in an interesting way.

B. Because they have to keep up a good relation with them.

C. Because they have to write about crime and gossip.

D. Because they have to compete with television.

3.How do many American newspapers attract readers of different political preference?

A. By avoiding carrying articles about extremists.

B. By supporting extremist groups from time to time.

C. By printing articles representing different political viewpoints.

D. By inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for them.

4.The passage is mainly about       .

A. the advantages and disadvantages of American newspapers

B. the characteristics of American newspapers

C. the development of American newspapers

D. the functions of American newspapers

“The car of tomorrow” runs one of the most famous businesses in advertising. People used to believe that science would promise a future of endless spare time and very cheap electricity. Nowadays the scientists’ predictions are a great deal less optimistic: a world challenged by climate change and decreasing resources.

In fact, “the car of the future” is just a symbol of hope. Carbon emis-Investment in new technology to maximize efficiency (效率) and minimize environmental damage is not only cleaning up the automobile producers’ act but is also setting an example to other industries.

It’s said that most cars of today run at about 15 per cent efficiency, which does highlight the potential (突显潜力) for improvement. Get it right, and we could continue to enjoy the freedom that comes with owning a car, without the worries.

Of course, many advances have already been made. There’s evidence that the buying public is eager to switch to cleaner, greener cars. And with petrol prices increasing there is no doubt that economical, efficient engines are going to be in ever greater demand.

The good news is that we can all drive “the car of tomorrow” today, without having to worry about the purchase cost. By choosing our holiday hire cars wisely we can cut down on our fuel costs and experience an eco-friendly drive whether or not we have already made the commitment back home. What’s more, we are caring for the beautiful places we love to holiday in. Hire a green car and you make a difference to the environment.

Designers will always enjoy catching our imagination with “concept cars” that look more like miniature spaceships than anything you see on the highway. Whether vehicles as radical (激进的) as these creations will eventually become family cars remains to be seen. But, for the moment, there’s no doubt at all what “the car of tomorrow” will be, and it’s here today: something familiar and friendly that does its job with considerably less trouble and much greater efficiency than the car of yesterday.

1.From the text the author wants to       .

A. make a comparison    B. introduce a new kind of car

C. make an advertisement    D. change an old concept

2.One current worry about developing the car industry is that       .

A. it provides less money

B. it’s not environmentally friendly

C. the competition is very fierce

D. the economic situation affects it a lot

3.It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that       .

A. fewer cars will be produced in the future

B. cleaner and greener cars are more expensive

C. cleaner and greener cars are in great need

D. no measures have been taken to improve car efficiency

4.What can we learn about “concept cars”?

A. It is doubtful that they will become family cars.

B. They’re considered as a result of imagination.

C. They’re of high efficiency and make less pollution.

D. They look like traditional cars on the highway.
