As a boy growing up in India, I had longed to travel abroad. I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s, with great interest.

My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and West Germany.

I have clear memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew (工作人员). The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is especially afraid of flying.

After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfur学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!t airport, for our re学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!turn flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河), it was simply an unforgettable experience. I had a somber feeling on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.

Being the first airline to take me abroad, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today,I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me,has always been a terrible and painful experience. Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to.

China has recently been faced with serious issues of product safety. In Panama ,it is said that medicine made with a poisonous chemical sickened some people. A Chinese company had identified it as diethylamide glycol(乙二醇),a low-cost substitute commonly used in automobile antifreeze(防冻剂).

Some countries have banned Chinese-made toothpaste containing diethylamide glycol. China has now told companies to discontinue its use, even though it says the toothpaste is safe. Another industrial chemical, melamine, was found in wheat flour used to make pet food in North America. Thousands of dogs and cats became sick.

The United States has restricted some imports of Chinese seafood because they contained banned substance. And questions have been raised about other products, including children's toys covered with lead paint.

Chinese officials promised to provide the European Union, the biggest trading partner, with detailed reports on enforcement efforts against unsafe goods.

Meglena Kuneva, commissioner(理事) for consumer protection of the European Union said China should have kept its promise.

China recently closed three companies linked to the Panama and the pet food scare. And it dismissed the former head of its food and drug administration. He was found guilty of corruption(腐败)for approving unsafe drugs. This week, a conference of the State Council approved a proposed special measure on the supervision of food safety. The Xinhua News Agency said it calls for stronger controls over producers, greater responsibilities for government and more serious punishment for illegal activities.

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful?

Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.

Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range(分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.

The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusually and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats. Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?

Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

1.How would the author describe the animals’ life in zoos?

A. Dangerous.B. Unhappy.C. Natural.D. Easy.

2.In the state of zoochosis, animals _________.

A. remain in cages

B. behave strangely

C. attack other animals

D. enjoy moving around

3.What does the author try to argue in the passage?

A. Zoos are not worth the public support.

B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.

C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.

D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

4.The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by _________.

A. pointing out the faults in what zoos do

B. using evidence he has collected at zoos

C. questioning the way animals are protected

D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats

5.Although he argues against zoos, the author would still agree that __________.

A. zoos have to keep animals in small cages

B. most animals in zoos are endangered species

C. some endangered animals are reproduced in zoos

D. it’s acceptable to keep animals away from their habitats

[1]Many people complain about their work day by day, however, we have some suggestions for you. Just keep all these in mind, and you are sure to feel happier than before.

[2]People Need You. There's always someone who relies on you, no matter what type of work you do. The public rely on the toilet cleaners to keep the toilets fresh. The public rely on the trash men to remove their unwanted garbage. So recognize that there are always those who need you to do a good job. Please don't let them down.

[3]Plan Out Your Day. Often, we'll find a day disappears as quickly as it arrives because we get bogged down with minor chores and emergencies that keep appearing. These minor fires mean we don't get to tackle the much bigger fires, which would give us a lot more satisfaction.

[4]What's the best way to deal with this? Plan out your day. At the end of your shift, decide what “major fires” need putting out tomorrow. Plan out when you'll tackle these major issues, and then stick to that plan no matter what little embers may pop up.

[5]Do something different. Consistency is a good thi学科网(www.zxxk.com)--教育资源门户,提供试卷、教案、课件、论文、素材及各类教学资源下载,还有大量而丰富的教学相关资讯!ng to have at work. But what isn't good to have is the same routine, day after day. It drags you down, it makes you tired early in the day, and it kills any motivation you have for the job.

[6]Do something different! Step out of your routine and take a fresh look at things. Inject some variety into your days, even if it's something as simple as taking a different route to work.

[7]______________. It amazes me sometimes how little some people actually know about their work colleagues. Your colleagues are not robots. They're other human beings too, breathing and talking and trying to make a living, just like you. So treat them as human beings. Get to know them a bit better each day by asking a different question, or by starting a new topic. Share experiences with them, and they'll realize that you're human too, and that it's OK to talk with each other about something other than work.

2.Why should we deal with the bigger issues first? (no more than 10 words)
