Three Boys and a Dad

Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother.Expecting a whole day to relaxhe was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months.“This will be like a walk in the park”he’d told his wife.“I’ll look after the kidsand you can go visit your mom.”

Things started wellbut just after eight o’clockhis three little “good kids”—MikeRandyand Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfastdaddy.”When food had not appeared within thirty secondsRandy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum.Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍)Mike chanted “Where’s my toastwhere’s my toast” in the background.Brad realised his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.

Life became worse after breakfast.Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head.Randy locked himself in the bathroomwhile Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants.Nobody could find clean socksalthough they were before their very eyes.Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes.Brad knew the talk show had already started.

By ten o’clockthings were out of control.Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter.Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.Randythankfullyappeared to be reading quietly in the family roombut closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.

At exactly 1117Brad called the daycare centre(日托所)“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes”The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.(2012·陕西,B)

Scientists in Israel have discovered a new way to test for water pollution by “listening” to what the plants growing in water have to say.

By shining a laser beam (激光束) on the tiny pieces of algae floating in the waterthe researchers said they hear sound waves that tell them the type and amount of contamination (致污物) in the water.

“It is a red lighttelling us that something is beginning to go wrong with the quality of water” said Zvy Dubinskyan aquatic biologist at Israel’s Bar Ilan University.“Algae is the first thing to be affected by a change in water quality.”“The secret” he said“is to measure the rate of photosynthesis (光合作用) in the algaemeaning the plant’s ability to transform light into energy.” During photosynthesisplants also release oxygen into the air.

Dubinsky’s technique is easy to perform because of the overabundance of algae in the planet’s water. Most of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from algae.A prototype tester that occupies about one square meter of a laboratory desktopshoots a laser beam at water samples to stimulate photosynthesis in the algae. But not all of the laser’s heat is used.Depending on the condition of the algae and the rate of photosynthesissome of the heat is shot back into the watercreating sound wavesDubinsky said. With a special underwater microphoneresearchers are able to analyze the strength of the sound waves and determine the health of the algae and the condition of the surrounding water.

“Algae suffering from lead poisoninglike waste discharged from battery and paint manufacturing plantswill produce a different sound than those suffering from lack of iron or exposure to other toxins” said researcher Yulia Pinchasov. She said that testing algae photosynthesis can determine water quality more accurately and easily than laborintensive methods now used like chemical and radioactive carbon testing.

1.The underlined word “algae” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to a kind of________.

Ainstrument  Bplant

Cwood  Dpollutant

2.Why is the algae tested?

ABecause it floats on the water.

BBecause it can have photosynthesis.

CBecause it is the first to be polluted.

DBecause it can produce different sounds.

3.We can infer from the passage that________.

Aalgae can produce a loud sound when polluted

Balgae can die easily from pollution

Cphotosynthesis of the algae can only be caused by sunlight

Dphotosynthesis of the algae is related to water quality

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their healthbut many do not know that indoor air pollution can also have significant health effects.Environmental Protection Agency studies indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 35 timesand occasionally more than 100 timeshigher than outdoor levels. These levels of indoor air pollutants may be of particular concern because most people spend about 90% of their time indoors.

There are many sources of indoor air pollution in any home. These include sources such as oilgascoalwoodand tobacco productsbuilding materialswet or damp carpetand furniture made of certain pressed wood productsproducts for household cleaning and maintenancepersonal careor hobbiescentral heating and cooling systems.

Immediate effects may show up after a single exposure (暴露) or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyesnoseand throatheadachesdizziness.Such immediate effects are usually shortterm and treatable.Sometimes the treatment is simply removing the person’s exposure to the source of the pollutionif it can be identified.

The likelihood of immediate reactions to indoor air pollutants depends on several factors.Age and preexisting medical conditions are two important influences. In other caseswhether a person reacts to a pollutant depends on individual sensitivitywhich varies tremendously from person to person. Some people can become sensitized to biological pollutants after repeated exposuresand it appears that some people can become sensitized to chemical pollutants as well.

Certain immediate effects are similar to those from colds or other viral (病毒性的) diseasesso it is often difficult to determine if the symptoms are a result of exposure to indoor air pollution. While pollutants commonly found in indoor air are responsible for many harmful effectsthere is considerable uncertainty about what concentrations or periods of exposure are necessary to produce specific health problems.People also react very differently to exposure to indoor air pollutants.Thereforefurther research is needed to better understand the effects of indoor air pollution and to find efficient ways to protect our health.

1.According to the first paragraphwhich of the following is NOT true?

APeople often fail to notice indoor air pollution.

BIndoor air pollution sometimes is more dangerous than outdoor air pollution.

COutdoor air pollution may not be so serious as indoor air pollution.

DIt is obvious that people have been paying more attention to indoor air pollution.

2.According to the authorwhich may NOT be the source of indoor air pollution?

ABuilding materials.  BWet carpet.

CCooling system.  DRefrigerators.

3. What does the underlined word “irritation” in the third paragraph probably mean?

ABad intention.  BMuch sensitivity.

CInjury.  DCarelessness.

4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

CPollution Resources  DDifferent Pollutions

The way people hold to the belief that a funfilledpainfree life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happinessthen pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in factthe opposite is true.More often than notthings that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a resultmany people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably (不可避免地) brought by such things as marriageraising childrenprofessional achievementreligious commitment and selfimprovement.

Ask a bachelor (单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honesthe will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment.Certainlycommitment is quite painful. The single life is filled with funadventureand excitement.Marriage has such momentsbut they are not its most distinguishing (显著的) features.

Couples with infant (婴儿) children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a threeday vacation.I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates timenow we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates moneybuying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envywe now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

1.According to the authora bachelor doesn’t want to marry mainly because________.

Ahe is unwilling to take family responsibilities

Bhe believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

Che finds more fun in dating than in marriage

Dhe fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

2.Raising childrenin the author’s opinionis________.

Aa moral duty

Ba thankless job

Ca rewarding task

Da source of inevitable pain

3.To understand what true happiness is one must________.

Ahave as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime

Bmake every effort to liberate oneself from pain

Cput up with pain under all circumstances

Dbe able to distinguish happiness from fun

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

AHappiness often goes hand in hand with pain.

BOne must know how to attain happiness.

CIt is important to make commitments.

DIt is pain that leads to happiness.

Jack Benny was one of the most famous names in show business. He was born in ChicagoIllinoison February 14th,1894.His parentsMeyer and Emma Kubelskywere religious Jews. They had moved to the United States from Eastern Europe.Benny was a quiet boy.For much of the timehis parents were busy working in his father’s store. As a childBenny learned to play the violin. After finishing his schoolhe joined the Navy.He continued using his violin to perform for sailors. In one show he was chosen more for his funny jokes than for his skill with the violin. That experience made him believe that his future job was a comedian.

Benny developed a show personality that had all the qualities people dislike. He was known for being so stingy—he refused to spend any money unless forced to do so.On his shows Benny often spoke of his appearanceespecially his baby blue eyes.As he grew olderhe always claimed to be 39 years old.Benny rarely made jokes that hurt other people.Insteadhe would let the other actors on the show tell jokes about him.

In real lifehe was very giving and he was a person people liked having as their employer.Benny entered the new media of television in 1950.Five years laterhe dropped his radio programme to spend more time developing his television show.At first his appearances on television were rare.By 1960 the Benny Show was a weekly television programme. It continued until 1965.Benny appeared in about twenty films during his life.A few became popular. But most were not.In 1963 Benny returned to Broadway for the first time since 1931.

Benny received many awards during his lifetime.Perhaps the one honour that pleased him most was that his hometown of Waukeegan named a school for him. This was a special honour for a man who had never finished high school.

Benny continued to perform. He died of cancer in 1974.At his funeral his friend Bob Hope said“Jack Benny was stingy to the end.He gave us only eighty years.”

1.Benny was determined to be a comedian after he ______.

Aleft high school

Bjoined the Navy
