Long ago in a small town, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit.

When he arrived, he bounced(跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “ This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.”

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, “This is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.”

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see on the faces of the people you meet?

1.Why was the first dog surprised when he entered the house?

B.Because he didn’t know there were 1,000 mirrors in the house.

C.Because he was always in a mixed mood.

D.Because he saw so many dogs smiling at him.

2.Why did the first dog like the house?

A.Because there were 1,000 mirrors in the house.

B.Because he thought he could keep himself warm in the house.

C.Because he liked everything presented to him.

D.Because he felt he was welcome here.

3.The underlined word “ growl” probably means ______.

A.make an unfriendly noise                 B.smile             C.say hello   D.stare

4.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?

A.A Small happy Little Dog                  B.The House of 1,000 Mirrors

C.The Wonderful Place and the Horrible Place.  D.Two Little Dogs

Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.

Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.

“Surgery(外科手术)”, one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller!”

At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!

It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.

No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

1.We can know from the passage that the author works as ______.

A.a doctor          B.a model           C.a teacher          D.a reporter

2.Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to______.

A.marry a better man\woman               B.become a model

C.get an advantage over others in job-hunt     D.attract more admirers

3.According to the passage, the author believes that ______.

A.everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost

B.it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs

C.media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery

D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career

4.What does the author think of his height?

A.He hates to be called a short man.

B.He tries to increase his height through surgery.

C.He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.

D.He just accepts it as it is

Do you want to live another 100 years or more? Do you want to live never to die? Some experts say, it will be not a dream one day. Modern technology will make it come true. Man will live more years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life.

“ I think we are knocking at the door of immortality,” said Michael, a professor and author of two books on human life expectancy. “I think by 2075 we will see it and it’s no longer a dream. Human’s life expectancy may have not limit.”

At the meeting in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School said advances in using genes as well as other technology make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said. “Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 300 or 500 years.”

However, many scientists are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last more than about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and other parts of the body will finally lead all humans to death.

Scientists also hold different opinions on what kind of life man might live.  “If you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life? It’s a big question.” said Leonard Poon, director of the university center.  “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”

1.The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means _____.

A.dying slowly       B.living longer        C.living forever       D.dying quickly

2.Donald’s attitude is that______.

A.human beings may never die in the future

B.it is not certain how long humans can live

C.the human body can last about 120 years

D.it is possible for man to live longer in the future

3.What would be the best title for this text?

A.Living longer or not                      B.Science and long living

C.No limit for human life                    D.Healthy lifestyle and living

4.In the last sentence “get to that point” means ____.

A.get that idea                           B.get to 120 years old

C.know how to live forever                 D.have good quality of life

In the United States, friends can be close, constant and real. But if they move live far away from each other, little by little, they will not be as close as before. But neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while, then no more. If two people meet again by chance, even years later, they will be delighted and pick up the friendship again.

In America, you can feel free to visit people's homes, share their holidays and enjoy their delicious food. If you are invited to a party, just accept their hospitality(款待) for various reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties or family customs. It is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one's home than to go to a public place. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you aren’t treated well. You know, strangers are not invited into the home.

Don't feel neglected if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery is not certain, and arrival times are often delayed, so flowers are not often sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! In fact, signs outside change in different lands, but the welcome in the heart is real and valuable.

1.You will find friendships _______ in America if they are not near each other.

A.die suddenly       B.come back         C.disappear gradually  D.last forever

2.The underlined part in the last paragraph can be replaced by “______”.

A. Don’t feel you are paid little attention

B.Don’t accept an invitation quickly

C. Don’t feel you should be treated well

D.Don’t pay much attention to the flowers

3.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A.American Hospitality                     B.American Friendships

C.American Invitation                      D.American Welcome

Kids are drawn to smoking for a lot of reasons — to look cool, act older, lose weight, or feel independent, but you can keep your child from getting addicted to tobacco. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

Discuss other topics in a way that doesn’t make your child fear punishment or judgment.

Stress what your child does right rather than wrong. Self-confidence is your child’s best protection against peer (同龄人) pressure.

Encourage your child to take part in activities that rule out smoking, such as sports.

When it comes to the dangers of tobacco use, it’s important to keep talking to your child about it over the years. Even the youngest child can understand that smoking is bad for the body.

Ask your child what he or she finds attractive or not attractive about smoking. Be a patient listener.

Read, watch television, and go to the movies with your child. Compare media images with what happens in reality.

Discuss ways to respond to peer pressure to smoke. Your child may feel confident simply saying “no”. But also offer your child responses such as, “It will make my clothes and breath smell bad.”

Encourage your child to walk away from friends who don’t recognize or respect his or her reasons for not smoking.

Explain how smoking affects the daily life of kids who start doing it. How do they afford the cigarettes? How do they have money to pay for other things they want? How does it affect their friendship?

Set firm rules that forbid smoking from your house and ______: Smokers smell bad, look bad, and feel bad, and it’s bad for everyone’s health.
