Celebrate the Good Days

It was in April of what seemed to be a great year. I was in fourth grade with the greatest teacher, Miss De Rosear — the coolest teacher.

As I crawled (爬) up on the sofa next to Mom, she gave me a kiss and a huge smile, so I      and went on with my normal after-school activities. During the TV show

that I always watched after school, Mom started getting phone calls. The calls continued for the rest of the night. Each time the     rang, Mom rushed to her room. I then knew that something bad had happened.

When Mom came back, I asked, ―Mom, why do you keep on     the room every time you get a phone call?

She turned to my sister and me and said, ―Girls, I have something to tell you. I have cancer (癌症).

As she said that I felt a sharp pain in my heart. I was thinking, ―Why is God taking my mom from me so soon? What have I done?

I didn’t know that we were just beginning a very long,     journey.

hug, or ―it will be okay advice.

On April 5, my mom became a five-year survivor (幸存者). When that day came, we had a big party. Friends came from far and wide to celebrate how      Mom is and her success against cancer!

One day when Hungbu was working in the fields, he found a bird which had broken its leg. He took the bird home and looked after it carefully. The bird gradually became stronger, and when summer came, it flew away to a warm place. A year later

it soon grew into a plant which produced many gourds (葫芦). When Hungbu opened one of the gourds, he was amazed to see that it was full of treasure. He wanted to use the treasure to do something useful. The next day he bought a big house and moved there with his family.

A habit is a usual practice. Everyday activities become habits for most people. For example, Mark wakes up every morning and reads his newspaper with a cup of coffee. People in different countries have different cultures. Cultures have certain habits as well. In North America there are many habits which are different from those

in other countries. The way we eat is one example. An American might eat toast (烤面 包) or eggs for breakfast, but in Asia people might eat rice and soup for breakfast.

If someone’s habit troubles you, it is called a pet peeve (不能忍受的事). A pet peeve can be considered rude by another. Cross-culturally you’ll find many different pet peeves. Spitting (吐痰) on the street or bumping into (碰到) someone without

saying ―excuse me‖ might be considered rude. Wearing improper clothes or saying something at the wrong time can also be a pet peeve.

In the United State it is rude to cut in line, which means to step ahead of someone who has been waiting longer than you. Americans will generally form a line if more than two people are waiting. There seems to be an unwritten rule of first come, first served, which gives order to large groups. When traveling to a foreign country, it is a good idea to find out which habits may be considered pet peeves by the native people. When in Rome do as the Romans do is another expression that reminds us to follow the customs or habits of the local people.

1.According to the passage, the way we eat shows .

A.our eating habits are changing

B.habits can trouble our daily life

C.we must eat healthy food every day

E.different cultures have different habits

2.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.A survey about pet peeves.

B.Ways to change pet peeves.

C.Punishment for pet peeves.

E.Examples about pet peeves.

3.According to the passage, when we visit a new place, .

A.we need to buy some gifts for the best friends

B.we should follow the habits of the people there

C.the local people can help you to find out good ideas

E.the local people can serve us our favorite food and drinks

A life decided to eat fruits and greens or one in which you enjoy juicy steak (牛排) and hamburgers, which do you prefer?

It is not a question of culture, it is not even a question of killing animals. Even a carrot dies when pulled out of the ground. It is a matter of the protection of the planet

because our meat eating habits might be stressing (给……压力) our ecological (生态

的) system.

It’s no longer ―might‖, we are destroying our planet.

Most of the meat that we eat comes from livestock, which is about 23 billion in population and causes the waste of our natural resources. Every second of every day one football field size rainforest is destroyed, and much of it is used to farm and raise livestock.

Raising the animals also requires huge quantities (量) of water, mostly to grow

the grains (谷物) fed to them. It takes over 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, which can be used for a seven-minute shower every day for a minimums (最小量) of four months. Take your pick: four months without a shower or a hamburger.

Meat has to be cut, cleaned and processed. One doesn’t just buy a cow and start eating it. According to David Pimentel from Cornell University, it takes 20 times more energy to produce beef than tofu, and both have the same good sources of protein (蛋 白质).

The waste from the animals is one of the main causes of water and air pollution. The animal waste cannot be used in the fields because it can spread diseases to humans. In 1995, 25 million gallons of animal waste flowed into the New River in North Carolina, killing 10 million fish and destroying 364,000 acres of coastal (沿海 的) wetlands.

Animal farming also produces larger quantities of greenhouse (温室) gases, such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). If your next Christmas is unusually hot or especially cold, blame the steak you ate the night before.

I am not saying that everybody needs to stop eating meat right this minute. I don’t think we can produce enough corns, fruits, and vegetables. I am just saying we need to

cut our meat consumption (消费), 70 grams per day is okay if we want normal weather,

clean air and drinking water.

1.According to the passage, our meat eating habits are a question of .

A.showing the culture B. killing the animals

C. harming the plants D. protecting the planet

2.What does the word ―livestock‖ in Paragraph 4 probably mean .

A.the animals we feed B. the farm growing the grains

C. the supermarket near us D. the factory producing meat

3.From the passage, we can learn that .

A.animal waste should be used for planting

B.we’re destroying the farm to raise animals

C.animal farming produces greenhouse gases

D.we use the same energy to produce beef and tofu

4.According to the passage, the writer thinks we should .

A.try our best to eat less meat every day

B.only eat steak for our health next Christmas

C.eat less vegetables for the clean air and water

D.feed animals instead of planting enough plants
