Guilin is my favorite city in China because of its beauty, its waterways, its cafes, and most of all because I met my wife there. It is her hometown and we will both retire there in a few years. Not only is Guilin a fascinating city, but there are many interesting places to visit within a short drive from there. The Ling Canal is the oldest canal in the world. It was built about 2,200 years ago and connects two major river systems, the Yangtze and the Pearl River. The Longsheng Rice Terraces (梯田) is another manmade wonder that was built around 650 years ago.I have some photos of both of these places in my China Daily homepage Albums. The Gudong Waterfall Park is another attraction that is worth visiting. The hike to the top of all these waterfalls isn't very difficult and if you want, you can take a ride to the bottom on a personal rail car (机动轨道车) that you control the speed with a brake. If you want, you can also climb up some of the waterfalls with the help of chains that are placed for the convenience of amateur climbers (业余登山者). I have only been in Guilin during the winter and spring, but my wife tells me it gets pretty hot in the summer time. That's OK because I grew up in the Midwest of the US where it gets very hot and humid during the summer months. But in Guilin almost everything is within walking distance and if you need to go further the buses come by every 5 minutes on the busy streets and every 10-15 minutes just about everywhere else. There are plenty of taxis, too, and most trips are only 6 yuan. It's a perfect place to retire. 1.The writer likes Guilin best mainly because ________. A.it has many water ways B.he met his wife there C.he likes its beauty D.it has lots of cafes 2.Which of the following is the manmade wonder in Guilin? A.The Ling Canal. B.The Gudong Waterfall Park. C.The Longsheng Rice Terraces. D.A and C. 3.The underlined word “brake” means ________. A.遥控 B.刹车 C.方向盘 D.油门 4.Which of the following is NOT true? A.Guilin is the writer's wife's hometown. B.The history of the Ling Canal is three times as long as that of the Longsheng Rice Terraces. C.It's convenient for the amateur climbers to climb up some waterfalls with the help of chains. D.Guilin is really a good place to retire and live in. 5.What's the weather like in summer in Guilin? A.Very hot. B.Quite humid. C.Rather hot. D.A little cool

When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do? In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer. Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true. Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit’s foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!” People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole of good luck. 1.Which thing is mentioned in the oldest good luck tradition? A. A falling leaf B. A rabbit’s foot C. A shooting star D. A cheerful wish from friends 2.According to Paragraph 3, we know that ______. A. people can see a shooting star on a rainy night. B. shooting stars can often be seen C. people believe that it’s unlucky to see a shooting star. D. your wish may come true if you see a shooting star. 3.British people try to catch 12 falling leaves because ______. A. the leaves fall in autumn. B. there are so many leaves to catch. C. they want to have a whole year of good luck. D. the leaves can bring them a lucky month. 4.In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “them” refers to(指)______. 阅读短文, 完成表格 Celebrating New Year’s Day is one of the oldest and most exciting traditions around the world. Since this festival marks the beginning of the year, New Year’s Day is thought of as a perfect time for a “clean start”. People in the world decide to act better in the year just beginning than the year just ended. No day has ever been celebrated in so many different ways. All over the world, countries have their own special beliefs about what the New Year means to them. In Scotland, the New Year is called Hogmanay. In the villages of Scotland, barrels of tar (沥青) are set on fire. It represents that the old year is burned up and the new one is allowed to enter. New Year’s Day is also the Festival of Saint Basil in Canada. Children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year’s Day with the hope that Saint Basil, who is famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts. The Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. It is an important time when Jews promise to do better in the future. Special services are held in the church, children are given new clothes and New Year bread is cooked to remind people of harvest time. On New Year’s Day in Japan, everyone gets dressed in their new clothes and homes are decorated (装饰) with bamboos—symbols of long life. In European countries such as Germany, France and Belgium, families start the New Year by first attending church services. Afterwards, they visit friends and relatives. In France, boys and girls receive gifts of money on New Year’s Day. New Year celebrations around the 1.
