BEIJING—The sky is gray and air smells strange. It’s another day of smog.

On Saturday, heavy haze(霾)still covered north and east China. Highways were closed and     couldn’t take off on time.

To fight pollution, the Chinese government now plans to clean up the air by cutting coal use,      some factories, and removing 6 million old cars from the roads.

“We must face up to the facts,” said Yan Naiqiang, a professor of environmental science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “The treatment of smog will be a long fight. From now on, if we use buses or cars less and do more riding, we believe a clear sky is not a faraway dream.”

I have been used to school life since I came here two months ago, and I am starting to enjoy most of my time in here. School starts at 9 o’clock every morning, and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have long days, in which we have 9 lessons and school finishes at 4 o’clock. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday we have short days, in which we have only 6 lessons and finish at 1 o’clock. After lessons, we have 2 hours of activity time, when you can choose from a number of activities, including many sports, such as rugby(英式橄榄球) , football, basketball and tennis.

As a boarder(寄宿者), the quality of food is something I consider very important, and Merchiston has not let me down. The school kitchens are run by a professional company, and the quality of food is excellent, and they are always trying to make the diet healthy. One of the obvious advantages of being a boarder is that we can have breakfast in the school, which means we don’t have to pull ourselves out of bed as early as the day pupils!

For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people’s emotions (情感). How you feel is controlled by many things. Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.

People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special “sunrooms” with artificial (人造的) lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two!

The weather can also affect people’s emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.

1.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor (因素) that can affect one’s emotions?

A. Weather.                             B. Actions of others.

C. Personality.                          D. Age.

2.Which of the following is true about vitamin D according to the passage?

A. It is a kind of artificial chemical.

B. It makes us worried by affecting our brains.

C. It is needed by us all to keep fit.

D. It is in the sunlight.

3.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A. We feel good when we are in the bright cool weather.

B. We will be happy when we are caught in the rain.

C. All people in Norway and Sweden feel sad in winter.

D. The more vitamin D you have, the happier you’ll be.

My 13-year-old daughter Lisa remembers birthdays, makes people cards when they are sick, and sends encouraging notes written in colored pens in her neat, artistic hand.

One day I got a call from her principal, “I called to tell you that in 20 years of teaching I have seen nothing like what Lisa did today”, he said

I held my breath again as I thought, my Lisa? My sweet daughter? She must be the wrong kid. What could she have done?

My silence made him go on. “I’ve never seen a student do anything so nice for anyone who needed it more.”

“What did she do?” I asked. He explained to me about the cupcakes (杯形蛋糕).

When Lisa came home from school that afternoon, I told her the principal from her school had phoned me.

“Yeah”, she answered, “I got called out of math class to go to his office. Everyone thought I was in trouble, but he just wanted to know what was going on at lunch.”

Lisa and Ashley had sat with Jordan, a boy who is in special classes. They talked about birthdays, and Lisa asked Jordan when his birthday was. He told her it was coming up but that he lives in a group home and they don’t celebrate birthdays there.

“I remembered his birthday was today, so I made the cupcakes yesterday,” Lisa explained. “Ashley bought a two-liter bottle of soda and some birthday cups, plates, and napkins (餐巾纸) left over from her little brother’s party, and we got some other kids together at lunch today to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jordan.”

“The principal wanted to know why they were having a birthday party for Jordan at school. When they told him, he just shook his head, took off his glasses, and rubbed his eyes,” Lisa told me. “Finally, he said he was going to tell my parents that I wasn’t in trouble, he was proud of what I did, and I could go back to math class.”

How different my daughter was from me. Better, in fact! I wouldn’t have ever known how to help out disadvantaged kids like that. But my wise daughter knew how-- all it took was cupcakes and adventurous (富有冒险精神的), independent (独立的), kind spirit.

1.What kind of person is Lisa according to the article?

A. She loves making friends with boys.

B. She is fun-loving and humorous.

C. She is warm-hearted and caring.

D. She often asks for trouble.

2.What can we know from the school principal’s phone call?

A. Birthday parties are usually not allowed at the school.

B. The principal was angry with Lisa and her friends.

C. Jordan was in the same class as Lisa.

D. The students thought Lisa was a lot of trouble.

3. How did Lisa and Ashley celebrate Jordan’s birthday?

A. They bought him a beautiful birthday cake.

B. They brought him food and drinks from home.

C. They invited Jordan’s parents to the birthday lunch.

D. They had the principal sing “Happy Birthday” to Jordan.

4. The writer wrote this article to ______________.

A. call upon schools to care more about disadvantaged kids

B. encourage kids to help others in whatever way they can

C. show how proud she felt of her daughter’s kindness.

D. show that  helping others is rewarding in itself.

In UK, Closed Circuit Television(CCTV)cameras are everywhere. They help the police solve crimes and keep the streets safe. But that’s not all they do. They also catch people doing very stupid or smart things.

One of the videos is of a British woman Mary Bale. She clearly doesn’t like cats. In 2010 she was caught on CCTV throwing one into dustbin. The video shows Mary walking down a quiet street. All of a sudden, she notices Lola the cat jump onto a fence. Mary stops to pick up Lola and drops her into a larger dustbin. Lola was saved fifteen hours later. And Mary was arrested for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. She was fined(罚款)£250 and was not allowed to own pets for five years.

Another video shows “Britain’s drunkest man”. He’s been at a party at London’s Savoy Hotel. And he’d obviously had a few too much glasses of beer. At about 2 a, m., he was kicked out for being too drunk. So, he decided to walk home. On the way, CCTV cameras filmed him falling down stairs and crossing the roads madly… A Savoy Hotel waiter later said, “It’s amazing he didn’t hurt himself badly.”

Sometimes, they also record smart events .Once a British band didn’t have any money to make a music video. So, they came up with an unbelievable idea. They set up their instruments (乐器)  and played a song in front of eight CCTV cameras. And then, according to the English Freedom of Information Act, they asked for a copy of all the footages(视频),which they edited. The result is that a totally new music video was made ,and it didn’t cost them a penny(一分钱).
