A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate (争论) about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A. Many people are against Amy Chua’s parenting style (风格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way. Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children’s abilities. “The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua’s parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children. She also sees a risk (风险). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised. 1.Which of the following words can best describe Amy Chua? A. Polite.B. Cruel.C. Strict.D. Popular. 2.The underlined word “retreat” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____. A. give upB. go onC. go outD. give out 3.According to Ms. DeBroff, _____. A. Amy Chua’s parenting style should be forbidden B. Americans should learn from Amy Chua C. parents should have their own parenting style D. Amy Chua’s style is bad for children’s growth 4.In which part of a newspaper can you read the passage? A. Business.B. Entertainment.C. Sports.D. Culture.

One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time! Make plans — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old! 1.While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ________. A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well 2.When we provide help for our friends, we should ________. A. try to do everything for them B. put them before ourselves C. change their bad habits first D. ignore their faults 3.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words? A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends. 4.What is the passage mainly about? A. How to find a good friend. B. How to help friends in trouble. C. How to be a good friend. D. How to make more friends.

On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn’t believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy. I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road. Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word. I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head. After this happened, I thought about how thankful I am. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I didn’t really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help. 1.When the author saw the little girl, ________. A. the girl had lost her way B. she was driving to work in a hurry C. the girl feared to go across the road D. there weren’t many cars on the road 2.The little girl ran away from the author because ________. A. she wanted to stay on the road B. she didn’t know the author at all C. she wanted to look for her father D. she needed to catch her stroller 3.The author thought that her help was ________. A. really necessaryB. worth praising C. not welcomeD. not useful 4.What can we learn from the passage? A. The girl’s father didn’t like the girl at all. B. The girl’s father had wanted to thank the author. C. The author shared her experience with her son. D. The author felt sad that no one else helped the girl.

Hiking can be a pleasant as well as a not so pleasant adventure. You will have to take a number of measures so that your hike is a pleasant experience. Hiking Tip 1 — Start Early Most hiking experts hold the opinion that it is rather sensible to start hiking at 3 or 4 in the morning, even if it is a full-day hike. Since most hikes are conducted at high altitudes, starting off early will make sure that you are back down during the afternoon hours. Hiking Tip 2 — Be Light Since we are anyway talking about the load you will carry, another important hiking tip is to carry fewer loads. If you are going on a hiking trail on a familiar path, you will need reduced survival items, as chance that you will get lost or hurt yourself on these hiking trails is little. Hiking Tip 3 — Reduce the Number of Breaks Once you start your hike, you should make sure you do not take too many breaks. You will need to maintain a consistent speed and minimize the number of stops which you take. Speed and rest stops help distinguish an inexperienced hiker from an expert hiker. An inexperienced hiker will have bursts of speed and energy and it will be followed by rest stops. This results in slowing down the general speed. Hiking Tip 4 — Tip for Children Do you plan to take your kids along with you on the hiking trail? Well, then you must be looking for hiking tips for kids! You will have to educate them about nature and also get them into an exercise routine before taking them on a hike. Kids have a tendency to run in the beginning. This exhausts them and they have to be carried, which is certainly not the best of ideas. 1.You are advised to start hiking early in order to ________. A. finish your hiking in a day B. enjoy your hiking completely C. avoid getting tired D. get back down early 2.What should you do if you are going hiking on an unfamiliar trail? A. Carry enough survival items. B. Keep a high speed. C. Start hiking in the afternoon. D. Carry fewer loads. 3.According to the text, inexperienced hikers ________. A. don’t keep a consistent speed B. will easily get lost C. choose well-established paths D. don’t stop to rest 4.If you want to take a kid for hiking, you should ________. Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization. Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets. “Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind’s earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic. When the wind is from the west All the waves that cannot rest To the east must thunder on Where the bright tree of the sun Is rooted in the ocean’s breast. As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull. It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling. It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid–ocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿) nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too; unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking. 1.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is ________. A. always energetic B. lacking in liveliness C. shaped like a square D. favored by ancient poets 2.What is the purpose of using the poem “Storm at Sea” in the passage? A. To describe the movement of the waves. B. To show the strength of the storm. C. To represent the power of the ocean. D. To prove the vastness of the sea. 3.What does the underlined word “symbiotic” mean? A. Living together.B. Growing fast. C. Moving harmoniously.D. Breathing peacefully. 4.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to ________. A. a beautiful and poetic place B. a flesh and blood person C. a wonderful world D. a lovely animal
